Who we are and what we doWe are Aurel Aebi, Armand Louis, and Patrick Reymond and in 1991 we established atelier oï in La Neuveville, Switzerland. It takes its name “ oï ” from the word tr(oï)ka — in Russian “ triple harnessing ” — to express the dynamism and the holistic energy generated by an ensemble of three.Human and artistic alliance, sharing values and ideals, the will to move forward together and build a common path, while stemming from three different stories: these are the intangible bonds and the profound motivations that have connected the three of us for 20 years. A partnership that epitomizes both the alliance of three open and creative minds and their common impulse towards shared visions. As conjured-up by the choice of the word “ atelier ” — which indicates a place of creation and mastery of know-how and crafts — our work ranges from architecture and interior architecture to design and scenography on an international scale. How we workWilling to break off from a rigid disciplinary mind frame, we have always preferred a pluralistic attitude rather than a mono-cultural system. Our work stems from a true fusion of disciplines that are often classified as separate. This encounter of different disciplines and experiences, allied to an instinctive and emotional approach to the material, allows us to amplify our creative inspiration, to broaden the frontiers of our imagination, or to alter perspectives as well as scales, and twist the use of a conceptual tool. Materials are explored, twisted or solicited with endless curiosity, in a continuous quest for discovery and knowledge. Therefore, experimentation represents an essential aspect of our approach. What inspires usWhile bringing to life a new project, whether architectural or design, or in the approach to creativity, our inspiration always stems from the vision we form around a given context. The starting point of the process is often the material: its nature, its behaviour, its reaction to external stimuli and possible interaction with other materials. Thus, our creations often stem from an intuitive and emotional approach to the crafting of the material. The observation and understanding of the context and the manipulation of the material then leads through different paths, in search of an harmonic whole, where the material itself may interact with more intangible elements such as sound, movement, colour… Our design philosophyOur creations, always streamlined and conceived with simplicity, are the expression of a search for a harmonic and natural unity. They aspire to epitomize a “ po-ethic ” vision of creativity, in quest of bringing the individual closer to the elements, to nature, to the material and to emotions. The range of inspirations and elements that may contribute to the creative process are very rich: music, colours, light, smells and movement. Also: the possibility of drastically changing a perspective, to make unexpected use of a given shape, to venture into the one thousand and one facets of one or several materials… Our stylistic influencesOur team, observations and experimentations, and the philosophy of the Three Musketeers who lived by the motto “all for one, one for all". Undoubtedly, our diverse paths of studies in architecture, design and naval construction, as well as the encounter of unique personalities such as Alberto Sartoris and Ettore Sottsass, have influenced our philosophy and attitude, pushing us not to limit ourselves to the frontiers of a one and only discipline. Our future goals and ambitionsTo realize a hotel – a place of well-being – designing everything from architecture to objects. Our personal likes and dislikesHypocrisy and bad quality. |
